When you sit at your desk and work at your computer all day, it’s easy to forget about your health. Without a properly supported chair that supports proper posture, you can experience severe back and wrist pain. The best office chairs are specifically designed to change that.
We’ve spent months researching the best-selling ergonomic office chairs to find out which ones can really help you. After extensive testing by raters and a lot of research, we chose the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro (available from Autonomous). Its overall comfort, comfortable fit and value set it apart.
We tested a dozen chairs to find the perfect fit for your office or home office. Whether you plan to sit for an extended period of time or just want a break from a standing table, we’ve got you covered.
The thick fabric Autonomous ErgoChair Pro seat provides better cushioning and comfort than the other chairs in our review. The fabric seat cushion and mesh back work together to support your back without suffocating your body.
Nearly all of our testers felt comfortable in this mesh office chair, regardless of body size. Adding to its wide appeal is the unique tilt feature: users can recline back without losing head, neck or lower back support.
The standalone ErgoChair Pro can also change its shape to suit almost any need. The seat is deep enough that even the most vertically reclined person can feel like they are sitting in an adult seat. Anyone with back problems will appreciate the adjustable lumbar support, which is made from the same comfortable fabric as the seat.
Finally, the chair tilt mechanism allows you to lean forward, tilting the seat and back towards the workstation. This is great for precise tasks and extreme attention to detail. You can get close to the action without the risk of falling.
At just under $500, the standalone ErgoChair Pro strikes the right balance of price and quality, making it the perfect office chair for most people.
Aeron by Herman Miller is supportive, comfortable and ergonomic. It got its premium price thanks to its great build and unique features like the PostureFit SL. Two flexible cushions in the lower middle of the chair support the sacro-lumbar (SL) spine. They also adapt to the sitting position, whether you’re sitting up straight, bending over to focus, or taking a nap.
Adjusting the angle of the seat took a lot of strain off the legs and made us feel like the forward seated posture was more effective. We’ve also unlocked the recline limiter to further stretch your legs and relax your spine.
One of our favorite features is the fully adjustable armrests. This firmness makes them feel solid and supportive. They remain secure and are easily adjustable. The lever that unlocks the vertical movement of the armrests is hidden in the back of the chair.
During the purchase process, you can customize your Aeron chair to add support and functionality. You can customize the seat size, armrest adjustment, material, back support and angle. However, keep in mind that additional personalization will drive up the price. The Aeron chair is a luxury item for those looking to splurge on an office chair.
Buyers on a budget will be happy with the price of the Branch Ergonomic Chair under $500.
The seat cushion is made from 3″ high density foam which is comfortable even for long hours of sitting. The chair is also adjustable in height, which allows you to choose it for any type of physique. For example, the seat can be adjusted 4 inches in height and 3 inches in depth.
The chair’s waist height can also be adjusted, as can the seat’s ability to resist tilt. The armrests are also adjustable in height, width and depth.
The mesh back allows air to circulate to keep you cool all day long. The chair is relatively easy to assemble and comes with all the necessary tools.
The chair also has a resin frame and an aluminum base for support and durability. High quality materials give this sling a 300 lb. load capacity. The wheels make it easy to move the chair on both hard floors and carpets.
Unfortunately, if you want headphones, you’ll have to pay extra. The Branch Ergonomic Chair may also be too small for a person over 6 feet tall. For a taller option, consider the Branch Verve office chair.
There are many customization options. The frame is available in two colors and the seat and back are available in a variety of colors.
The Branch Ergonomic Chair is a great option for anyone looking for a high quality office chair without the designer price.
The Steelcase Leap is made from supple and durable leather that excels in quality and class. The most notable design solution of the chair is the stylish back.
The lumbar support tends to stick out at the back, but Steelcase has tucked it in, helping the Leap fit into even the most traditionally furnished office. There is also a built-in control knob for adjusting the firmness of the lumbar support.
The Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Lumbar Support Office Chair provides all-day comfort with superior lumbar cushioning. The seat is made from Tempur-Pedic’s signature Tempur foam and provides a soft, supportive cushion.
Between the soft yet firm cushioning and well positioned lumbar support on the back of the chair, back pain sufferers can find relief in this chair. Suitable for all body types, this Tempur-Pedic office chair offers many adjustments including seat height, angle, and armrest height and width.
Not all settings are perfect. Armrests are fixed vertically, but not horizontally. Armrests can move even at the slightest touch, diverting attention during work. The heavy parts of the Tempur-Pedic office chair and vague instructions made assembly more difficult than other chairs.
Overall, this chair is a great choice for those who need lumbar support. The padded seat relieves stress on the organs, ensuring a pain-free working day.
Despite the unique back design, we found this chair lacking in other departments. As we increased the depth, the seat became a bit stiff and brittle. The armrests are wobbly and require two hands to fine-tune the width.
What sets this chair apart from the competition are the armrests. Gesture’s arms have joints similar to human shoulders, allowing them to move in any manner.
We also appreciate multi-tilted rods. Its four-position backrest angle adjustment is an improvement over the conventional recline lock lever. The cloth upholstery is comfortable and provides a good upright posture, but the overall feel is a bit firmer than other cloth seats.
Amia has many benefits. It has a sleek built-in lumbar support reminiscent of the Steelcase Leap. It also has fully adjustable armrests, seat depth, and tilt and tension locks. The back of the chair supports more than expected, but unfortunately the hard fabric cushion makes this chair uncomfortable.
With a backrest inspired by the Golden Gate Bridge, the Herman Miller Sayl chair looks great and sits even better. Thanks to its incredible design and flexibility, it fits our back perfectly, no matter what position we take.
The chair is comfortable to sit on, easy to assemble, and its minimalist design means it will look great in most rooms. While it might not be the best chair we’ve tested, the Branch Daily chair is a solid, direct-to-consumer office chair that won’t break the bank. Plus, it comes in a range of stylish colors including slate, sky blue, lime green, and black.
If you are looking for a chair with good lumbar support and a soft seat, then this is the chair for you. It’s perfect for people 5’11″ to 5’11″, which is pretty standard for an office chair. Our tester was over 5ft 11in and still found it comfortable, reassuring us that it would fit all sizes.
The version of the chair we tested had a built-in massager and heater. The heater warms up almost quickly and definitely helps with lower back pain. The massager and heater only work for 15 minutes, after which they turn off. However, you can easily restart the heat/massage cycle if you wish.
The built-in heater and massager are charged via USB or AC power. As you would expect, they cost extra. But if you can afford them, they can be a game changer if you sit comfortably at your desk for hours.
Even without the heater and massager, the seat of the memory foam chair is very comfortable. With the exception of the depth of the armrest and headrest, most parts of the chair are relatively easy to adjust. Whether you are sitting or reclining in this chair, your back will thank you.
Who wouldn’t be curious about one of the most popular office chairs on Amazon? Unfortunately, this is when you get what you pay for.
The hard plastic arms of the Furmax office chair are very hard and uncomfortable, and there aren’t many options for how to sit. The winged back conforms to your back and provides some support. It feels like it could crack or tear if you lean back too far. The fabric seat cushions are quite comfortable for short periods of time, but you won’t want to stay on them for more than a few hours.
If you’re shorter and/or on a budget, the Furmax office chair is a great choice. Otherwise, we suggest you look elsewhere for your next office chair.
Many of our staff and writers (who better?!) tested office chairs for this guide, including former Reviewed Labs product test technician and chair enthusiast Kyle Hamilton, as well as staff writer Samantha Mangino and contributor Terry Williams and Madison Trapkin.
For three weeks, our fellow reviewers actively sat down, adjusted, and rested in every chair we threw at them. We researched everything the chair had to offer, including materials, adjustability, durability and overall comfort. We then polled testers to get a wide range of opinions because convenience is subjective.
Office chairs are presented in a wide price range. We tested chairs starting at $100 and chairs starting at $2,000. On average, expect to spend between $300 and $700 for a high-quality, ergonomic chair that will last at least 10 years.
Ergonomic design is one of the most important requirements for an office chair. In a typical workweek in one year, you can spend up to 1900 hours in your office chair.
