As the transition from home offices to real corporate offices begins, it is important to keep employees comfortable, safe and motivated in the workplace. Adding the right furniture design can go a long way in creating an office that encourages motivation and productivity. And, if the design manages to be stable and ergonomic, well, you’ve ticked all the boxes. And the Humanscale Liberty Ocean Chair is exactly what you need!

Designed by office furniture brand Humanscale, the Liberty Ocean chair is, as the name suggests, made from almost a kilo of discarded fishing nets found in the ocean! Claiming to be “the first work chair made from recycled fishing nets,” the Liberty Ocean chair collection is Humanscale’s bold and commendable effort to address the growing problem of ocean plastic. The chair is the successor to the original Liberty chair which is also very ergonomic and minimal. It was designed by the late industrial designer Nils Diffrient and is still available in a variety of colors and finishes.

Like the Liberty line, the Liberty Ocean line also features a shape-sensitive Humanscale mesh back. The attractive backrest automatically adapts to the shape and contours of the user’s body, resulting in a seat that is surprisingly comfortable and ergonomic. This is supported by swivel backs, contoured seats and self-adjusting chairs. All of these handy features come together to create a custom-made chair.

“Liberty Ocean combines the timeless design of our classic Liberty chair with recycled fishing nets that continue to destroy our oceans and marine life,” says Jane Abernathy, director of sustainability at Humanscale. “Materials can be rethought to make them perfectly ergonomic. Serve only to our consumers, but to serve the world.” The Liberty Ocean chair is a net positive, which basically means that it also has a positive impact on climate, water and energy. In fact, over 60% of Humanscale products have a net positive result. The Liberty Ocean Chair also comes with a 15 year warranty – serving you well until retirement!
